This week is our local County Youth Fair. Last weekend we were at the Wisconsin State Fair in Milwaukee. This is a very different kind of fair. They have the rides, food and animals but they also have tractors, tractor pulls and lots of Country Music. For our area this is a nice little fair.
We started our day with a loaded baked potato. This was surprisingly good. I could have done with real bacon instead of bacon bits bit it was tasty. My son also ordered the broccoli and jalapeños on the side because those are things we all don’t necessarily like on potatoes. For $5 this was a hit. All three of us ate some and no one felt slighted by the amount we ate.
As cream puffs are to the Wisconsin State Fair (every single person we mentioned going to the fair to said, “Did you have a cream puff?”) the corn dog is to our County Fair. The picture doesn’t show it well but there are 2 lines of about 30 people at 11:30 am. This is before the fair even officially started! By the time we were leaving the lines were about 50 people each.
This is what they were waiting for. All beef hot dogs (you can get brats too) hand dipped and fried. They are good. Not something I would wait in lines like that for but they were good.
This is where my heart is, the taffy stand. I love taffy. Although it is not the big sticks I remember from my youth it is still the quintessential fair food for me.
We had to get the 165 piece bucket. Strawberry, cinnamon, chocolate, banana, watermelon and sour apple were the flavors we chose. Delicious!
We finished our day with Elephant ears. One was topped with cinnamon and sugar the other with powdered sugar. The difference between fried dough and Elephant ears are that fried dough is heavier and actual pieces of dough. Elephant ears are more of a light batter fried thin and crispy. We all declared the cinnamon and sugar was by far the superior topping with these.
Then we were off to view the crafts and exhibits. We plan on attending again towards the end of the week to ride the rides and maybe pick up some more taffy.
What is your must have fair food?
Candy Apples! Yum-o xx

You know, I don’t think I have ever had a candied apple. I have had caramel apples and they are amazing. Maybe time I try one!

They are so yummy Marci-the ones here in late October are jumbo sized green apples and a thin coating (do not want to break any teeth!) on the outside. Fun. Caramel apples are yummy too, so is taffy, a staple in Florida! LOL xx

Funnel cake. Is funnel cake like elephant ears?

Similar. Funnel cake is usually batter drizzled in to form pieces with holes in it. Elephant ears are one giant piece.

They were good. I am a plain girl myself (I prefer most food without condiments). I think it is a holdover from childhood.

I’ve never been a fan of fair food, but the best I’ve had is french fries loaded with lots of garlic and cheese!
