I have been trying to figure out what to say today. I am so tired.
Last night I went to my 13 year-old son’s room at 1:00 am to check on him after my daughter came to me crying about the outcome of the election. I found him sitting on his bed with laptop trying to make the Electoral count show that Hillary could still win. He had gotten it down to 40 electoral college votes and he looked at me, “It’s still possible that the Electoral College won’t vote the way that they are supposed to isn’t it? Forty votes is doable.”
I sat with him for awhile as we talked about how the election was basically over. Then I sat while he and his sister cried and I joined them for a bit. I cried for our country, our world but mostly for them. Their hearts were broken and they were scared for our family and their friends. I assured him and my daughter that no matter what we will be okay. We will continue to love each other and help others around us. We will be kind, caring and compassionate as always. We will go out of our way over the next few weeks and months to be strong for those who are scared. We will continue to try and change the world by being ourselves.
We are all a bit raw right now. It is hard to look into the big unknown wondering if your marriage and adoptions will all be undone. But, we are resilient. It was a possible setback for my family and many others all over the United States who are still trying to figure out what this will all mean in the days and weeks ahead. But, life will move forward in hope, strength and love for our fellow Americans.
Donald Trump is our president for the next four years. It wasn’t my choice but it is how the American public voted.

I had similar conversations with my 3 as they woke up to our new reality today. We have less at stake than your family but are also sad for the lost progress, for the setbacks and the culture that will pervade our country. “We will be kind to everyone,” is what I told my kids as they walked out the door. It’s all we can do….

Stay strong for the children. Stay positive and assure them they will be safe. Then behind closed doors, pray like hell that they will be! You have friends out here in cyberspace who care.

It was heartbreaking for me to tell him it was done there was no way out of this. He was so angry at everyone and so sad for what he thought was a country that cared about everyone. The language of hate and anger from all sides in this election have definitely taken a toll.

It’s such a hard and unbelievable situation to believe! I feel sick too and I would never vote for him! I honestly thought Hillary would win! It’s a sad day for many in the U.S.

I kept my son home today because he was up until 3am but selfishly I wanted both kids near me today. I try to protect them and I worry the day is coming where I can’t. It is so sad….

Aww 😦 I hope your son is doing a little bit better. I got sick so my grandma took care of my son yesterday. He’s at school right now. I think he’s sad because he won. I guess I have to deal with it when he gets out of school.

I’m not even in America but I’m still grieving in a way. I think the world is in shock. My Facebook feed last night was littered with sad and angry posts. I’m terrified for all the women of America. I’m even scared for myself. There is a heaviness in the pit of my stomach. America is supposed to be this world superpower, forward thinking and for freedom and all those good things, yet I feel like America has just told the world that women are second class. I feel like I’m a little bit less than I was yesterday. Has the word “woman” been redefined to mean “property”? Both sexually and reproductively?
I’m so glad my babies are young and have no idea how big a backslide the world has taken. I pray everyone will be ok.
Sorry for my rant. It’s a sad day for all.

Please rant. They are the same things I feel. We are headed back 50-60 years in the rights of women and minorities. If they institute Stop and Frisk I fear what will break out in this country. People were scared as they saw the face of America changing and they asserted themselves by voting for the one who said everything they are thinking. Sad, sad day to see this.

I told my blog followers pretty much the same thing you told your children. The important thing right now is to resist fear. I know that is not easy, but fear is what has created this mess. We also continue to shine our light and pray that others will awaken. I can’t imagine anyone not seeing how loved and cared for your children are.

I am puffy eyed and have had to shut my door several times at work. I have been hearing about the conversations my friends have had to have with their kids about the situation – I am sure it is difficult to explain to your kids who are just beginning to learn about the world of politics. I’m loving all the positive and inspiring posts I’ve been reading – yours included. It’s what we need, now more than ever.

I had a similar conversation with my 9 and 15 year old daughters this morning. How? Why? And we’re not American. My heart goes out to all who feel fear right now. You are so right in saying that you and yours must be more attentive to all who need reassuring in the coming days, weeks…Stay strong.x

For once I’m glad my kids don’t know much about elections and discrimination. They are too young and too naive. Just praying the kids of our generation don’t feel the hate so we can breath easily!

I almost couldn’t stop crying today. After the initial grief and mourning, we’ve got to take action. I can’t imagine how this is affecting and touching your kids and children of this country period. We’ve got to make a better future for them.

Yes!! We are stronger together. My fiancé and I just signed up to volunteer with CAIR in our city, and are volunteering with Freedom Oklahoma, the LGBTQ rights alliance. Our voices will not go unheard and we have to protect our brothers and sisters that don’t look like us or worship like us.

I’ve been watching this election campaign here in the UK with interest and was truly horrified when I woke up to find out Trump had won, never expected it to actually happen but then I didn’t expect the UK to vote to leave the EU. But the thing is every American i spoke to was against Trump so who actually voted for him and were they maybe not vocal about it? Or is it in the group of friends and community of bloggers I associate with all have the same ideology and values that I have ( that are the complete opposite of Trumps and Trump supporters) Will be watching what happens with trepidation. I have friends who were gonna move to the US ( one is US citizen already and actually went home to vote to keep Trump out) but they were waiting to see what happened with the election, think they might stay in the Uk now!

Hillary Clinton did win the popular vote but our elections are not counted that way. Mostly middle class families who saw their jobs in factories go away and nothing comparable to replace them. Their incomes have stagnated or gone down over the last 10 to 12 years. They are upset and angry that everyone else is passing them by. Mostly middle and rural areas in the US. I get why they did what they did but in the end I don’t think things are going to go the way they hope they will. We will just have to wait and see.

Yeah the election system seems confusing in comparison to what we have in the UK. I can totally understand those reasons but as you say I don’t think it will go away easily or that Trump will solve those issues easily or any quicker than Clinton. I suppose they didn’t think that Clinton was in tune with middle class people as well. Oh well, majority rules and we have to stand by the result and see what happens. For the US and the UK I think there will be a few interesting years ahead!

My son is 12. And he is extremely interested in the world facts. And he followed all your elections. He was really sad about the results. I can’t imagine your children. But anyway, this is democracy, and I think we should be proud of it. Even if we must be the Knights of Peace and don’t get too angry so that we go on creating an escalation of bad words and hate. Accepting is not agreeing.

Exactly. We will continue to support the causes we believe in, that will not change. We will continue to point out injustice and confront it where we see it. But, we must realize that most people contributing to to the burning of property, burning flags and hate crimes are fringe elements from both sides. Most Americans are in the middle and just want to see things get better for everyone.

I recognize that I am going to be a minority, perhaps singular, poster on this thread. I voted for Trump.
Numerous reasons exist, but I can boil them down to a few, succinct ones.
1. Immigration, in particular Islamic immigration, into the US. It must be stopped until we know we can – reliably – vet these people. No more Pulse Nightclubs; no more San Bernardinos. And I state this as a white Jew married to a non-white Muslim woman (who, by the way, is also firmly against such immigration).

You who decry Trump’s talk about grabbing p*ssy should be aware that these people have turned whole swaths of cities in Europe into rape hell-holes for anyone not in a burka. (And even if you are in a burka, your status and value is nothing more than a baby factory – READ the Koran… the only places where women are mentioned in a positive light is where they are wives and mothers.)
2. A nation without borders is not a nation. Do you welcome the burglar who broke into your house? Why, then, should we welcome those who break into our country – regardless of where they came from, they need to be sent back.
3. Hillary broke the law. Period. Any objective reading of the applicable statute, US Code, Title 18, Part I, Chapter 101, P2071 a and b are crystal clear.
IS HILLARY GUILTY?

Is Trump a crude man? Sure. Is he guilty of violating federal code that explicitly prohibits him from holding office? No. Hillary is. If the Rule of Law is to have any meaning, she COULD NOT hold office.
Let me be clear. Was Trump my first choice? No, nor was he my second choice.
As a poster above stated, too many people have seen their incomes slashed, factories closed, and the primary way to make money NOT be the creation of goods and services, but the peddling of influence and promises of favors.
What good or service did Clinton, Inc., provide to go from “dead broke” to over $200 million? Countries like Saudi Arabia, where pay-for-play is the way, don’t contribute $25 million out of the goodness of their hearts. And FYI, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, massive donators to the Clinton Foundation, are also funders of ISIS as wikileaks revealed.
Faced with no good choices, I held my nose and chose the candidate who IMHO at least loves America.

We are all different and have different points of view and different things that are important to us in a candidate. It was not the best our country could have put forth but it was what we had to choose from.

No argument there. I looked at BOTH and said “200+ million adults and these two are the ones we have?”
For the record, I was very much in favor of Scott Walker initially, but he got knocked out early. My second choice was Cruz, as a staunch conservative. But he, too, fell by the wayside.

I’m extremely late posting on this, my bad. I’m glad you included how legally Hillary should not have been able to hold a public office. A huge part of America was upset about the two candidates and I keep asking myself, ‘if that many people are upset then how in the world did these two become our only options?!’
I was 100% against Hillary Clinton. I understand everyone voted in their best interest and I respect people’s choices. I just don’t see how she would be the best choice for anyone in general.
Trump didn’t get my vote, I voted for a third party and had a small hope that America was so upset over the candidates that somehow a third party member would become president. However in the end, even though Trump didn’t get my vote, he did have my support. I was pulling for Trump by the end of it and I honestly hope he proves everyone who thinks bad of him wrong, not out of spite, but because the country can’t afford to have a president that will fail.
