The picture above is not my pantry but one I envy from Google.
People throughout history have always had somewhere to store their food. Whether it was larders to store meats, buttery to store beer and ale or the pantry used to describe these spaces in the Medieval times to the more formal Butler’s Pantry of the 1800s every item was to have a proper storage space. Modern pantries made a resurgence in the 1990s when people started to return to the nesting mode. Mostly they are used for storage of non-perishables.
Everyone has different items that they keep on hand in their pantry. For me I have 3 sets of shelves in my basement where we keep our pantry supplies. I always try to keep 2-3 months of non-perishable goods to make it from one sale cycle to the next. Sales generally cycles generally rotate every 6-10 weeks.
Being from an area where we have gone through several blizzards it is always in the back of our mind during the winter that we may have to rely on the food we have for several days and I want to be prepared for any emergency. My thought is that I always want to have enough food to make at least 2 weeks worth of meals from just the food we have on hand. I remember a blizzard, when I was younger, where we were snowed in for about 10 days. They came to pick my father up on a snow mobile because he was considered essential work personnel for the city. After a week we could walk to the grocery store. We pulled a sled behind us as we walked down the main streets as there were no cars allowed on the roads. I always think how long could we eat out of our pantry if needed?
So what is in my pantry right now?
- Pasta, Rice, Quinoa
- Beans – black, pinto, garbanzo, kidney, Grandma Brown’s
- Canned Vegetables – diced tomatoes, tomato puree, corn, beans, carrots,
- Canned Fruit – peaches, pears,
- Canned Meats – tuna, chicken, Spam (yes, we usually have 2 -3 cans on hand)
- Applesauce
- Flour
- Sugar
- Spices – salt, pepper, powdered garlic,
- Vegetable Oil
- Corn Starch
- Baking Chips – Chocolate, White Chocolate, Toffee and Peanut Butter
- Cereal – Corn Chex, Rice, Chex,
- Canned Soups
- Chicken Stock and Beef Stock
- Salad Dressings – various
- Sauces – ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, soy, sesame, hoisin and oyster
- Crackers – various
- Peanut Butter
- Jelly
- Nuts
- Snacks for lunches – peanut butter crackers, chips, pudding, etc…
- Paper Towels and Toilet Tissue
What is in your pantry?
Nestle Chocolate morsels, flour, sugar, Jack Daniel’s Honey Jack Whiskey, Jameson Whiskey, 15 cans of corn, 10 cans of different beans, 2 bags of black eyed peas, over 30 cans of canned veggies, brown sugar (light and dark), and other non perishable stiff that I’m too lazy too itemize. I kid u not, I have my head slightly turned while looking at the pantry from over 25ft away because I’m lying on the couch while typing this. Oh there’s a broom and a dead spider hahahahaha

Lol. I don’t look for the spiders. I send the kids down with the vacuum. I like the whiskey. Ours is up high over the refrigerator to discourage teens. Both my kids think it smells disgusting so I don’t worry about them too much. 😉

A well stocked pantry is essential with a large family! In Florida we only drink Purified Water so there are many cases stacked! LOL Happy Sunday.

What is wrong with the water in FL?

Sulfur-have you never noticed the odor while in Disney??? We have never drank municipal water only bottled. Sometimes it is also over chlorinated and that makes me ill! Yuck-ooooo. We have water softners/purifiers in the homes on our property so bathing is not an issue. I have two 5 gallon water coolers in the house and use cases upon cases of bottled water. Just our preference. A lot of people are not phased by Fl. water. That’s all folks…LOL

Oh, I always just assumed it was just WDW. When we were in Jacksonville and Miami we never noticed the water so just thought it was a Disney problem. We have purifiers on the sink but we have lake water.

Most of the 20,000 acres of land Disney occupies (owns) was swamp! Canals are common too. On the Coast we are only 4-11 feet above Sea Level. Due to hydration, fresh purified water in my household is a must. I personally drink between 6-8/ 16.9 ounces daily! My children will often grab a bottle of cold water from the refrigerator before another type of beverage. They also love milk and I have honestly lost count of the gallons a week I buy for them and the hubs loves milk too.

I hated the water in Florida, stinky like rotten eggs! We always kept a 2 gallon jug in the fridge, and of course stacks of bottled water.

I’d be so embarrassed if you looked in my pantry right now! I have the best intentions, but it always seems to get disorganized … I know I need to figure out a way to keep the chaos under control- after all I am a grownup- right?
Perhaps you have spurred me on to a New Years resolution I should have made a long time ago!

I use simple boxes from the grocery store and bins from the $1 Store for packets of things. Doesn’t have to be fancy. Just organized enough so that you remember to use things before they expire.

No pantry here! No basement either. The only place I could possibly put one is in my laundry room, but then I would have to clean out all those cabinets.

I love my pantry but know some houses aren’t set up for them.

Oh wow! Ummm…lots of stuff! I’d like to do a post similar to this one after the first of the year if you wouldn’t mind.

Lol, go for it! I like people’s list because then I think, hmmm, maybe I should add that. Like water. I would never think of it but we decided today to add two cases, just in case.

There’s only me and Moose here, but I always have at least one case of water on hand. I learned this the hard way. We are on a well. Which means that if the power goes out…there is no water. You never realize really how often you use, drink, cook with, etc. water until you can’t get any.

We live on Lake Michigan so water never seems to be a thought but if it becomes overly polluted by algae or something we may need back up. It hasn’t happened but it could.

My pantry is a disaster zone! I really need to clean it out. But, I prepped for Christmas dinner/breakfast/treats for coworkers early. Currently I’ve got about a gallon’s worth of chicken broth, assorted nuts (peanuts/almonds/pecans), rice, egg noodles (always a good sale at my grocery store, so I stock up), onions, canned tomatoes, bags of stuffing (we’re going simple for Christmas since we have to work!), toothpicks, dried beans, canned beans, potatoes, one single sweet potato that has to be about 4 pounds (seriously this thing is HUGE!), a box of cake mix, flour, semolina flour, corn meal, corn starch, wild rice, about 6 different types of vinegars, couscous…I really am way too stocked up!

No such thing as being to prepared as long as you use it! I am low on onions and potatoes right now. I keep forgetting to pick them up when they are on sale. 🙂

Lol. I get that. When Lucky Charms are on sale my daughter gets 2 or 3 boxes because she never gets to have it.

Is that your pantry? Or a supermarket? What a great collection.

Was just listening to something last week outlining difference between different storage areas like larders and pantry that comes from French for bread. It was about how come to rely on fridges for items like eggs and ketchup.
