Spiedie Chicken

What is Spiedie Sauce? This is Spiedie Sauce. A Spiedie is a sandwich that is popular in the Binghamton, New York area. It has a Mediterranean/Greek flavor to it. It is meat marinated in a sauce of oil, vinegar, Italian spices, and mint. The ingredients vary slightly but are pretty similar. I bought a few jars when I was home for a visit.

Making your own Spiedie sauce is simple to but let’s face it sometimes just having that jar on hand saves our days. This was one of those days. I dropped the chicken in the slow cooker about 2 pm because I know we are eating dinner slightly after 8 pm tonight. Yes, we eat European style (or at least that is what I tell my children). Poured the sauce over the chicken and 6 hours later we made rice and a plate of cut vegetables into our dinner.

Verdict:

My kids love Spiedie chicken. It has a bright taste and the vinegar tang makes it all the better! You can serve this over rice or make it into a sandwich with a garlic aioli or tzatziki drizzled over the top! YUM!

Though I used the jarred sauce you can also easily make your own Spiedie sauce (see recipe below). I did not marinate my meat first but I HIGHLY suggest it as it will be so tender and flavorful!

Spiedie Chicken

  • Difficulty: easy

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons crushed dried mint
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 1/2 pounds chicken breast (cut into 1″ chunks) or whole chicken

Directions:

  1. Whisk all ingredients in a large bowl, except chicken. Pour into a large Ziploc bag and add chicken pieces (to grill later) or add whole chicken to bowl (cover bowl) refrigerate chicken either way for at least 8 hours up to 24 hours.  The longer it soaks the more tender and flavorful the chicken gets.
  2. Remove chicken from marinade and either grill chunks (this is the traditional way to make Spiedies) or put your chicken in the slow cooker on low for 6 hours.
  3. Once chicken has cooked through serve as a sandwich or on a bed of rice.

It’s a NY regional thing. They serve Spiedie’s at all the fairs and events in the area.

Can you fill the crock pot with the chicken pieces and spiedie sauce instead of the whole chicken breast?

Of course! I would cut down on the cooking time if you are using pieces.
