Loaded Blue Cheese Burgers with Candied Walnuts and Dried Cranberries

I am still trying to use up the 30 lbs. of ground beef I bought two weeks ago. I want to make sure my family doesn’t get sick of it so I have been trying to make it in so many different forms. Believe me this will not be the end of the ground beef meals.

My family LOVES blue cheese. Me, not so much. But, when I saw the blue cheese I knew they would love these burgers. Packed with lots of delicious ingredients and flavors I knew they would be a hit. Since I don’t love blue cheese I decided to make mine with a mellower Monterey Jack.

Verdict:

Everyone loved the layers of flavors and textures. From the crunchy sweetness of the candied walnuts, to the tang of the blue cheese, to the sharpness on the red onion it all blended together perfectly!

I served these with sweet potato fries and a green side salad to complete the meal.

Loaded Blue Cheese Burgers with Candied Walnuts and Dried Cranberries

  • Difficulty: easy

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 lbs. ground beef
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • blue cheese
  • red onion, sliced
  • leaf lettuce
  • Craisins or dried cranberries
  • 4 good sourdough rolls
  • Dijon mustard

Directions:

  1. Form ground beef into 4 patties. Liberally salt and pepper patties.
  2. In a small skillet over medium heat add butter and walnuts. Once butter melts add brown sugar to pan and stir for 4 minutes until brown sugar forms a coating over the walnuts. You will need to stir continually so that the nuts don’t burn. Remove pan from heat.
  3. Cook burgers on grill until done. Remove from grill.
  4. To assemble burgers: spread Dijon mustard over the top and bottom of the rolls, top with a lettuce leaf, sliced red onion, and dried cranberries. Place burger on top of cranberries. Top burger with blue cheese, candied walnuts and top of bun. Serve.

  2. I’ll bet you have one happy family. I’m trying to follow your lead, and shop less frequently, buy some foods in bulk (I have a big freezer), and meticulously plan my weekly meals. It saves a lot of money. Thanks.

Thank you! They are happy with my food game most of the time bit every once in awhile I get, “Can’t we just have plain hot dogs?” or “Do you have to take a picture of everything I eat?” 😉

  3. This recipe sounds really delicious. I have never added candied walnuts to burgers before but I’m sure they must taste amazing.

It adds a different texture and flavor to offset the blue cheeses and Dijon.

Thank you so much! My kids thought it was odd until they tasted it. Then they asked for more. 😉

Think it would still work if you swapped out the Blue Cheese for Ranch?

It may. I would go for a milder cheese rather than a salad dressing. Maybe a colby jack or a even a gouda.

      1. A sharp cheddar would be a nice compromise! Or a goad cheese?

Yes, definitely. I used Monteray Jack (because I don’t like blue cheese) but those would be good too.
