Everyone is busy this time of year. This is part of our busyness. My son, a ninth grader now, has been rehearsing for his high school musical “The Wizard of Oz.” He was the Winkie General – sings “Oh We Oh” and “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead – Reprise” was an Ozian and an apple tree.
Many of you may know my son is a person who has Autism. He loves the theater and three years ago taught himself to sing so that he could be Scar in “The Lion King Jr.” at his middle school (click for link to blog post). He has never been a great dancer despite being a good cello player body rhythm escaped him. He has always been a very good actor because as he explains he has to watch people all the time to try to figure them out. This has given him the ability to really study people, their facial expressions, and voices.
I sat in the auditorium and cried once again during his scenes. He continues to amaze me at every turn. He has worked hard and improved so very much at his singing and dancing. When he was dancing he kept up with the other kids not a beat or two behind as he has been in the past. He began to sing “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead” and I was scared for him as he always couldn’t match all the pitches and ended up singing/speaking parts of his songs. He did fantastic! He sang every note and I cried the whole way through.
Everyone told him how great he did after and although he was stilted and looked over their shoulder he would stand there and say, “Thank you” to each and every person. He didn’t have all the kids surrounding him like the other actors did after the show but parents and grandparents were coming over and shaking his hand and telling him how they thought he did a great job. I watched from the sidelines trying not to interfere and let him be himself. He makes me proud every day but on days like today when I can see the growth and the maturity slowly coming for him I know he is going to be fine whatever he sets his mind to doing.

Congratulations to your son, it is so difficult to get up in front of an audience and do something you know you are good at, to do something which you are not as good at, takes great courage. So whoo hoo, sending him lots of flowers (Imagine me throwing them at him on stage)

I can only imagine how proud you must be looking at your son and how far he has come. It is amazing how much and disciplined he is working on himself. It appears as if he understands the problem and also the possibilities to overcome it. This totally amazes me as if he observes himself. Fantastic!!

Thank you. Some things he gets others escape him. But considering he was four when he started to use silverware I know he can do anything with time and patience.
