For many reasons we have decided to move our January trip to Walt Disney World to March. We swore we would never be those people who planned their trips around school breaks but now that both kids are in high school it is a bit tougher. Christmas break was later this year lasting until January 8th and midterms are the third week in January so that really didn’t leave us much time to travel if we didn’t want them to miss their midterms and be prepared for them.
My daughter can do her on-line school anywhere which we absolutely love! But, she is now taking a college class and hates to miss any classes. I understand. So, we have decided to plan our trip around her spring break. My son’s schedule was too hard to try and accommodate. He has a class at two different colleges (Western and Michigan State University) for his gifted and talented program and their breaks are at different times than his high school break. Too difficult.
So this is going to be a mother/daughter trip. It will be her last one before graduating high school. My son will get his orchestra/band trip to the UK in June. Then we have asked him help us plan a special trip for the three of us next year. We have made suggestions of Disneyland with a trip up the west coast or a trip to see Mount Rushmore and all of the historic sites out there. He is a HUGE history buff and would love something like that. The only requirement is it has to be driveable. This mommy doesn’t fly.
All of our Fastpasses have been made and our Advanced Dining Reservations (ADRs) planned. I noticed for the first time I only made 1 or 2 Fastpass reservations for Epcot. With the tiered system having Soarin’, Test Track, Frozen Ever After AND Illuminations on Tier 1 where you can only choose 1 all the rest of the Fastpasses are near the front of the park and we want to do the countries mostly on this trip. We did take one Spaceship Earth Fastpass one day but the only other we chose were a Frozen one day and a Soarin’ one day. Too hard to backtrack and go in and out of the countries for FPs.
I try to make a mixture of past favorite ADRs and new ones we really want to try. This trip the new ones for us include The Jungle Navigation Co. Skipper’s Canteen, Yak & Yeti, and Chef de France. We are also going to be there during the Flower & Garden festival in Epcot so we cannot wait to try all the wonderful food booths all around the lake. Be prepared for TONS of food pictures!

Until now, I have been a complete Disney skeptic/cynic. However, since you seem to be a sane and rational human being, I am willing to give WDW a second look. Family members also live nearby and perhaps the Magic Kingdom has a place for us too.

Lots of people don’t like the commercialism and the corporate idea of Disney. I get that but it is a place for us to suspend belief for a bit and immerse ourselves in fun and make believe. Life is difficult some days and to forget the outside problems exist for a day or two is magical to us. As for sane and rational? I try to be those in small doses. 😉

I know that Disney is cliche to some, but we always have so much fun! As for traveling with history buffs, Gettysburg is a wonderful plave filled with historic sites, great tours, and beautiful countryside.

We are thinking of having our son do most of the planning for his trip. He wants to go to Gettysburg but I guess there is a town in the Midwest that has statues of all the presidents in it that he really wants to go to also.

It does become more complicated as our children grow up, doesn’t it? We have the same kind of problems with organising holidays around music school, cricket and the like.

I am glad to hear your high school age children still love going to Disney. I am looking forward to taking my daughter when she is 5 and hope it is a tradion we can continue.

That was how we used to do it when the kids were little. They like to help plan now. But we would be pulling into Disney property and they would see the Disney buses and say, “It’s not fair those people get to go to Disney!”
