Sometimes my family just wants plain old cheese burgers. I understand. They look at me and ask for no baby greens, diced jalapeno, cream sauces, or other weird ingredients on top. So, I made a point of making plain old cheese burgers. Of course I had to put them on pretzel rolls but still…
Verdict:
I have a confession to make, I am not a burger fan. It would be the last thing I think I would choose to eat. If we are deciding to go out to eat I never want to go out for burgers. The fries, onion rings, or sides are more appealing to me than a burger. I don’t get the rest of my family who really crave them. So, once in a while I treat them all to just a burger.
I have included our classic burger mixture below but feel free to add and change it to what you like. The pretzel rolls are what made it for me. Usually I will take my burger off the bun because to me it is usually too much bread and I like the flavor of the burger not the bread. But, these pretzel rolls were perfect for me. I used the same recipe as for our pretzel bites but made them into rolls instead.
Tip: Don’t over handle the dough once it has risen. Carefully pinch off rolls from the dough or you may end up with flat rolls. Also, make sure the area you are working in and letting the dough set in is warm enough. On top of a warmed oven or an area without drafts is best.
Ingredients:
Pretzel Roll Ingredients:
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- 1 egg yolk (save white to mix with 1 tablespoon of water to brush on top before baking, if desired)
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
- 3 1/2 cups flour
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- Coarse Kosher salt for topping, if desired
To Boil:
- 2 quarts of water
- 1/3 baking soda
Directions:
- Layer all dough ingredients in your bread-maker according to your brands directions. Set machine for white dough.
- On a lightly floured surface cut or pinch dough into 15 rolls. Try not to over work the dough.
- Cover lightly with a clean towel and let rise for 15 minutes in a warm area.
- Preheat oven to 374 degrees.
- Bring 2 quarts of water and baking soda to a boil. Place pieces in pan a few at a time and boil for about 30 seconds each. Remove pretzel rolls from pan with a slotted spoon.
- Place on a greased baking sheet 1″ apart. Brush with egg white and water if desired Sprinkle with coarse Kosher salt if desired. Bake for 12-15 minutes until well browned. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before removing from pan.
Cheeseburger Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 – 2 lbs. ground beef
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 1 tablespoon powdered garlic
- salt and black pepper, sprinkle over top
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 egg
- Cheddar cheese and condiments as desired for serving
Directions:
- In a large bowl mix ground beef, bread crumbs, powdered garlic, salt, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, onion, and egg together until just blended. Be careful not to over work the meat.
- Form into 8 patties of equal size a bit thinner in the center than the edges.
- Cook in your favorite method until done in the center. Serve with condiments on a pretzel roll.

You can buy them in some bakeries here but they aren’t as popular. I think they are wonderful!

I know you aren’t a fan of burgers, but I LOVE them (bean, beer, beef, any kind will do!) so now I’m going to have to try this. 😉

If you have a bread maker they are super simple! Even if you don’t you can make them similar to a regular roll just with slightly different ingredients.
