No Buy January!

So, we are one week from the end of our No Buy January! If you haven’t done this before you may want to consider giving it a try. Other than some fresh produce, dairy, and a few staples you eat out of your freezer and pantry. This uses up all those bits and pieces that you have frozen over the holidays and those canned goods that you may not see until they are way past their expiration date.

My freezer is almost empty and what is left after next week will be moved upstairs to a basket and be used first or be tossed because it is not going to be used. The canned goods shelves can be wiped down and ready for the stock up sales. Did you know February is canned food month? Did you know March is frozen foods month? If you are going to be stocking up on your staples you may want to clean those freezers and get those shelves cleared first!

I will do this again in June just before we are getting ready to add all the wonderful fresh produce to our freezers. Blueberries, strawberries, and fresh corn are on my list to freeze this year. What are you looking forward to?

I did not know that January was No Buy January, but I guess my freezer knew, in fact, stopped to work a week ago and I been forced to eat and cook all.

Lol! Well, that’s one way to clean it out! I need to start looking for a new one before that happens to us. Ours is getting old and not as energy efficient as it could be too.

  2. Wow! Good for you!! Can you freeze corn on the cob?

Yes! Place the ears in boiling water for 2-3 minutes and remove it from the boiling water to an ice bath for a minute or two. Let it dry well and then bag it for freezing! So easy and you get fresh corn after the season is over.

      1. I will try that in the summer! We always have so much in the summer and then all of a sudden, it feels like we are cut off! We eat so much of it!! Thanks so much Marci!

Here in Sanibel we’re ‘Eating the Freezer’ too, it’s my favorite money saving scheme. Obviously, we are eating the contents rather than the freezer itself!

You always motivate me, Marci. This morning a bunch of stuff came tumbling out of the freezer when I opened it. And I still couldn’t find what I was looking for. Houston, we have a problem!!

  8. I have been doing no buy for months except for Holidays. I may make it through January, but we are almost into “No Food.”

Yeah, we get to those times too. Usually we have to repair a car or major home appliance, or have heat in the winter…. Hoping February is looking up!

I have been doing the “no buy” thing for several months but I never seem to get anywhere. I probably should have told hubby to stop buying, eh? It takes two to make this plan work!

True! I have to hold myself back from the “Oh, well I ONLY need to buy one or two items to make this….” trap. I have to be better at substituting. Last night I really wanted quinoa but I used rice we were fine. It just wasn’t what I wanted.

  11. I love this idea! One of our favorite meals is salmon patties, smashed potatoes and French green beans with dill sauce that is sour cream with salt pepper and dill

I am going to try this for the next 2 weeks! Thanks for sharing

  12. We did this when we got back from Walt Disney World, at the beginning of January. Partly to use things up and partly to recover money spent whilst out there!
