Throwing Open My Closet Door

There is an episode of the sitcom “Friends” that is about Monica’s closet. Monica is super organized and obsessed with cleaning but she has one secret closet that no one has ever seen because it is her messy closet. I realized the other day I have one of those. I have been slowly getting our house ready for back to school which is kind of like my fall cleaning. I realized that this closet which is in our spare room/my office is the one spot I never touch. Things go in there but never come out.

It houses all the bins of old pictures, craft supplies, school supplies, and things all of us have stuffed in there over time. So, it is now time to fix it. I almost never go in this closet and the doors stay shut so I really don’t think about it until one of the kids leaves the door open after looking for school supplies or want to look at old pictures. See all those bins and boxes at the bottom of the closet? They are pictures. Tons and tons of pictures.

I am putting this out on my blog so that I will fix this. This is my challenge to me. That by the end of the first week of school on September 8th I will fix this closet. I am giving myself plenty of time so that I don’t overwhelm myself or make an unrealistic schedule especially with a vacation planned in the middle of all this.

Anyone out there have a spot they need to take care of too that you have been putting off or never really noticed?

  1. I just wish that my closets were bigger. I live in an older house and the way they are configured in general (areas of wasted space) make it difficult to access clothes to the far left or far right or very high shelves.

The other area is my home office. I have a lot of storage boxes stacked on top of one another. It’s difficult to make the room looks organized or stylish.

Oh, those horror closets. Not because we are afraid of what could be in, but because we know exactly what there is in… lol!

In our first ever home with little furniture nothing got lost, but we seem to have aquired too many ‘useful drawers’ over the years and can never remember which drawer anything was put safely away in. I love to attack drawers on a rainy day and there is usually proof that they have not been touched for years when I find a leaflet for an event five years ago!

Most of my house is fairly orderly. Everything has a place, except this one. I try not to open the door because I know my kids rummage through it. But, I am going to fix it. I love going through all the drawers once in awhile to clean them out.

  7. Oh how I can relate! I’ve not taken before or after images, but I’ve been cleaning out junk drawers, drawers, and closets for months in my quest to downsize. I don’t feel like I’m making many inroads though. I still have a lot of drawers, and a closet to get through plus the garage!

Best of luck with the challenge. I can’t wait to see your closet when you’ve finished your clean out/reorganize project.

Thank you. I figured if I made it public it would force me to deal with it. 😉

  9. You can do it! Start by taking everything out.. Be strong and ruthless.

That’s the hard part for me being ruthless. I am so damn sentimental.

Bob’s office. We planned for a working home office when we moved here, but never got it actually put together. So now, 4 years later we are working on it. We moved furniture we make room for a new desk. Of course that involved shampooing the carpet and moving 2 very tall library book shelves and the computer cabinet all of which had not been emptied and cleaned in the four years. We did manage to move them across the room ourselves — I was so proud! Then we put together the new desk.

Actually it’s looking good so far. I can’t believe how much larger that room looks. All that is left is to buy the new tech AND for Bob to deal with the clutter that was moved out– either get rid of or find an organized way to store it. He also needs to do the same with the closet in that room.

I have to admit I hate doing it, but there is something about cleaning and organizing that make me feel good when I’m finished — like I’ve definitely accomplished something.

Good luck with your closet. Have fun!

I loved reading the “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” books with my kids when they were little. This reminds me of that. Most of our projects start with let’s clean the rugs, change the curtains, etc.and say well since we have the furniture out let’s paint, clean out eveything….

I love the way these things unfold.

OMG. I have to do this to my places every so often. I think I will “need this someday,” but this means I can’t bear to throw it away yet!! Then it all comes too close & I have to deal with it! Benefits to the goodwill store. Somehow these closets breed the same clutter all over again.

Yes! We moved in 5 years ago and I was able to keep up until about 2 years ago. Now it is time to pay for the neglect.
