Pizza Margharita

I know there have been people who raved about the grocery store Aldi for years. We would shop there for milk, eggs, pasta, and some of their gluten-free stuff for my son but I was never a really huge fan f it. I figured we lived in a small area so we didn’t probably get some of the products others were talking about.

I have definitely changed my feelings towards Aldi. I don’t know if they stepped up their game here or if it has always been this way but we are choosing more and more of their products over the local grocery store. We now buy goat cheese at Aldi – $1.99 for 5 ounces versus $4.69 at our local grocery store. I was skeptical at first but it was just as good as the higher prices cheese. So, now we buy blocks of Parmesan cheese, half and half, butter, and sour cream too. Most of our dairy now comes from Aldi at about a third of the price. I hate to say it but I am an Aldi convert.

Just to note, you do have to keep an eye on prices because sometimes the prices sneak up for a week or two and items may be on sale for less at your local store versus the Aldi price. We had this happen with eggs the other week when they jumped from $.49 a dozen to $.99 a dozen and the local store had them on sale for $.69 a dozen. So, keep your eyes on the prices.

Verdict:

We bought the fresh Mozzarella for this pizza from Aldi. The cost was 1/2 of the local grocery store and my family didn’t even notice the difference.

Pizza Margherita is simple, basic. Tomatoes or sauce, fresh cheese (just a little bit) and fresh basil make the Italian flag – red, white, and green pizza. Use the best ingredients you can to get the best flavor from the pizza!

Pizza Margherita

Simple basic pizza with lots of flavor.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. pizza dough
  • 1 package (5 oz) fresh mozzarella, sliced thinly
  • 2/3 cup red pizza sauce or sliced tomatoes to cover the top of the pizza
  • fresh basil leaves

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Spread dough on a pizza stone or in a rimmed baking sheet with oil in the bottom.
  2. Bake crust for 5 – 7 minutes until crust is set.
  3. Remove pan from oven and spread pizza sauce over the top of the crust. If using tomatoes spread tomatoes in a single layer over the crust.
  4. Lay slice of mozzarella on the pizza and spread basil over the top of pizza.
  5. Bake for 10-12 minutes more depending on the thickness of the pizza. Bottom will be browned and top will be starting to turn brown.
  6. Remove pizza from oven and allow to rest for 3-5 minutes before cutting pizza.

Aldi has improved a lot over the years with better produce and groceries. Definitely some better prices.

We don’t have an Aldi’s here in Las Vegas. I’ve read great things about their products and prices. I’ve no idea if they plan to expand further west, but one can hope!

I can only imagine what a challenge it can be to have to adapt to a gluten-sensitive family member’s dietary requirements. I’ve tried cooking gluten-free for my mother-in-law on a couple of occasions with only mixed success. No disasters, thank goodness, but it’s not something I’d choose to do on a regular basis. Congratulations on your success!

    The pizza looks delish!

      1. Next time check out their Naan in the Bakery department. It’s yummy and freezes well for making personal pizzas. 🍕

We know Aldi over here for over 50 years and they do have good quality goods at low prices. They skip the decoration on one hand and know about good deals on the other hand.

This is just a theory, but I think sometimes people just sell things for a higher price so consumers think it’ll be a better quality product. Idk

I agree! Price has a certain higher quality perception for sure. Not always accurate as I have learned.
