Checking In: Day 49

Day 49 – Week 7 down. We are doing well. Now that we have had 2 birthdays and a graduation here it seems that this is normal now. We have a new routine and things are settling down. My son still has 5 more weeks of virtual school so the goal is to get him through his AP tests in the next couple of weeks and then concentrate on moving us all forward to whatever we will be doing for the summer.

My son celebrated his birthday this year with a virtual party. He plays Dungeons and Dragons on line with a group of friends every Thursday. So, we ordered cupcakes and delivered the individually wrapped cupcakes to the door of each on of his friends so they could have them together as they played. This was going to be the first year he had a real party. In the past we always did trips or neighborhood parties because of his autism he didn’t really have friends to invite to a party and this year he did. We were sad for him but we made it work.

We went to the grocery store the other day to pick up the cupcakes and as I looked around at the people in the store 75%-80% were wearing masks. I began to wonder if this was going to be our new normal going forward. Would there come a day when we will tell our grandchildren about the days before masks were necessary or you would great people with hugs and kisses instead of elbow bumps or nods? Yes, there may come a time when there is a vaccine but will we go back to polluting the air and water? I love looking at all the pictures from China, India, and even Los Angeles, California of all the smog that has cleared. It is amazing. How quickly will it all come back or become worse?

Anyways, we have another birthday in our house in two weeks. This is a tough one because she was supposed to be in Walt Disney World with her friend for their first solo trip. She has had three different trips planned for her birthdays over the years and each one has had to be cancelled for one reason or another. She thought for sure she would make this trip. Hoping she can celebrate her birthday during her next trip even though it really isn’t the same.

How have you been handling the celebrations in your life?

Our youngest grandchild had his second birthday, but he was happy spending a whole day with his parents and brother making a bizarrely coloured cake adorned with home made fondant sea creatures. then the next day having his ‘party’.

How sweet! My daughter would still love a cake like that. So glad he had a great day!

  2. Fortunately, we had our birthdays before lock down and the boys could celebrate with friends and family. We have had a lock down Easter and Freedom Day and my hubby’s birthday is approaching and I am sure we will still be at least partially in lock down then. I think we are adapting to this strange, new life too, but I can get a bit irritable as my work and home life seem a bit blurry now. My boys start on-line schooling again this coming Tuesday, I can’t believe a month of holidays has passed and here we still are in the same position.

Yes! We are starting to lose track of time. We eat when we eat, we sleep when we sleep. There is no real set time to do anything right now. I feel we are becoming a bit more nocturnal some days.

  3. Happy birthday to your son. MY daughter (22) was suppose to go to Disneyland this summer for the Star Wars exhibit but with how everything is now who even knows. It will be strange to see so many masks out there when I do start shopping again. I am trying not to go out right now. Have a fun cupcake party.

Thank you! My daughter was supposed to be in WDW next week and we are supposed to be there at the end of June. Fingers crossed! We are going out as little as possible to shop but still try to go once a week or so to the beach for our sanity. We don’t go near any people though. We look at some others and cannot believe how close they get together!

So, you have two Taurus at home… hehe. Very cool thing and it looks like your daughter’s birthday is right between mine and my son’s birthday. May is a great month 😄

I can confirm that regarding myself and my son. It can be a blessing and a curse (for oneself and for the others around)… lol 😄

I’m glad that your son and daughter are doing well and making the best of this messed up situation, Marci.

I just wish that people would wear masks/coverings whenever they are out in public, whether the state or city is now “open” or not so that we can get rid of this pandemic quicker.

Thank you! Yes, masks and good hygiene for washing hands and using hand sanitizer. I feel like I need to bathe every time I go out.
