Grilled Asian Pork Burgers with Sweet and Spicy Slaw

Day 60 – How is everyone doing? I know many of you have been working through this as essential workers and first responders. I hope you and your families are good. We are a bit stir crazy here. Still a bit cold, in the low 30s at night and trying to hit 50 during the day. Not warm enough to be outside for any length of time with the wind. We have done some yard work and a bit of gardening but we had several nights of low 20s so we are happy we didn’t plant anything. After Memorial Day we will plant flowers out front but other than that we have to wait for awhile to do anything big outside. I want to put out my porch furniture and have warm sunshine. It is so close I can feel it but not quite yet and it is making all of us twitchy here.

Verdict: I think I am half asleep today! I just realized I posted this without finishing the post. We loved the flavors of this burger. The pork was really juicy and the spices gave it that nice Asian flavor. I would use more or less ginger, hot sauce, and soy sauce to your families taste. The slaw gave it a nice crunch too. The kids asked me to make more pork burgers and to try other flavors too with it. Hmmm. Will have to think about this one.

I served this with a green side salad and beans to complete the meal.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. ground pork
  • 1 clove crushed garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons hot sauce
  • hamburger buns for serving, if desired

Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha
  • 3 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, divided
  • 1 bag shredded cabbage mix

Directions:

  1. Make slaw: Whisk mayonnaise, vinegar, Sriracha, sugar, and 1 tsp. salt in a large bowl until well combined. Stir in cabbage until completely coated. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use – at least 15 to 30 minutes for better flavor. To use remove from refrigerator and uncover. Stir well and taste. Adjust spices to desired flavor.
  2. Make burgers: Combine pork, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, and hot sauce until well blended. Form mixture into 4 patties.
  3. Grill over medium-hot coals (or broil) for 10 to 12 minutes turning once until cooked through. Serve on hamburger buns with slaw as desired.

Add what they will like. More ginger? A bit spicier add more hot sauce. Make it your own so they will like it! Good luck!
