Checking In: Day 119

Our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) share

Day 119 – Yesterday was the first day since April 1st that I haven’t posted. I needed a day away. I have been struggling with the news and reading and watching too much news. Now, knowing what is going on is not a bad thing but I have been almost obsessed with needing to know and staying up until 3 to 4 am every night reading all different perspectives on what is happening in our world. I am not just reading one source I am reading anything I can get my hands on for news. I need to detox a bit because it is making my head feel buzzy and my focus is scattered because all I can think about is what is going to happen next.

So, I am trying to concentrate on my house and cooking. We got our latest Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) basket yesterday. I love these deliveries. Most farms get their money when they sell their produce but they need most of their money before the seasons even begin to buy and plant seeds, hire workers, etc…. So, to help raise the money when they need it most they sometimes sell shares of their crops for a set price. It is usually a fairly large price $350-$600 depending on the size of your share and what is included. But, you usually get 12 to 20 weeks of produce. If you divide the initial cost by the number of weeks of produce it us usually about $25 – $40 per week. We easily could spend that at the grocery store but instead get a “surprise” basket each week of local produce delivered to us. This week we have Michigan blueberries, cherries, corn, onions, zucchini, summer squash, and cucumbers. My kids have already been picking at the fruit and we are planning how to use everything this week.

In addition to help keep me distracted our washing machine broke about a month ago for the second time and needed to be replaced. Do you know how difficult it is to order a washing machine and dishwasher during this time? The first one we ordered was not in stock and we were not informed. It was on back order for several months. We just happened to check the order and saw this. Cancelled that order and found a new one that was in stock but they could not deliver and install it for several weeks. So, hopefully (fingers crossed) on Monday we will have a new washer and dishwasher. No more going to the laundry mat. First world problems I know but it will definitely make life easier.

Is there something you miss? I realized the other day it was going to the movies. I was never a huge movie fan but realized I missed the experience of sitting in the theater and having the movie overtake you. Watching them at home on the television is just not the same.

Hope you all are staying safe and your families are healthy. Our little county is ticking upwards and when I got my haircut the other day, for the first time since February, the stylist was saying they are already talking of having to close again after being open for just three weeks. Sigh. We just need to get used to this up and down I guess.

Awesome idea with those surprise baskets. The blueberries are great to have. They are improving the Immun system. So, eat them rare!
Of course, the news are telling that the numbers in the US are scoring again. Also over here, the numbers are increasing but not that much. However, we canceled our vacation int Greece because it would not be a relaxing week anyway with all of those restrictions and the insecurity of how things develop. I don’t miss it anyway, to be honest. I enjoy my area so much and love to discover it a bit during our two weeks of vacation. I don’t even miss going to the theatre. I have so much to do and I am glad that this all limits stress and hectic. However, let’s hope that one year from today we may be a lot closer to the old normal (but with new insights)! Stay safe, Marci.

I’ve never heard of this. Do they have that in all states or is in some particular to Michigan?

I haven’t been to the casino since before the pandemic but that’s probably a good thing, lol.

Most states have CSAs is that what you mean? Especially if you are near farming communities we had one in NY too. I am actually looking into one for my parents near them in NC because it is harder for them to get out to the stores I was thinking a small share may be a perfect gift for them.

Oh, and yeah going to a casino is probably not a good thing now. They are now saying unless the air inside is cleaned it is not good to go. I don’t think casinos clean their air very well from what I remember of them being very smoky.
