Grandma’s Sloppy Joes

The temps dropped to the low 30s over the weekend. They are back in the high 60s/low 70s during the day but the evenings have that crisp fall feeling that make me look to to the homey, old-fashioned dishes. Spices filling the house with warm scents mean a perfect fall dinner to me.

It is time for casseroles, chowders, and warming dishes that are easy to make and have tons of flavor.

Verdict: I read that sloppy joes are going out of style and should stay out. What? One recommendation was to serve Sloppy Joes on lettuce wraps. Which is good if you are cutting carbs but Grandma’s Sloppy Joes need to be on rolls. These are more savory than sweet like some sloppy joes.

I served these with green beans and a side salad to complete the meal.

Grandma's Sloppy Joes

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 ¼ pound lean ground beef or turkey
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup crushed tomatoes or tomato puree
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoon cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons prepared mustard
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Salt and pepper
  • Rolls or Hamburger buns

Directions:

  1. Crumble ground beef in a large skillet over medium high heat. If beef is lean add olive oil to keep from sticking to pan. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. When meat is almost cooked through and beginning to brown, add in onion and pepper. Cook until beef is nicely browned and vegetables are beginning to soften. Drain off any grease.
  3. Add tomatoes, ketchup, water, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, and cinnamon to the meat. Stir to combine.
  4. Cover with lid, leaving lid slightly ajar. Turn heat to medium-low and allow mixture to simmer for 35-40 minutes. Stir occasionally and add extra water if needed.
  5. Taste and season to taste. Serve hot on rolls.

I don’t know why foods need to be considered in or out of style. I say, “If it sounds good to you, just eat it!” Lol!!
