Check In: Day 259

Week 37: I have been reading about Covid confinement burnout lately and I know I am there. In Michigan on October 12th we had 1,829 cases of Covid diagnosed that day. Six weeks, or so later, we are at 8,000 to 11,000 a day. What changed? A couple things. First the Supreme Court of Michigan overturned the Governor’s executive orders on masks, certain lock downs, etc…. Many people were grateful to get back to work, see family, and eat in restaurants without masks. Some stores started dropping mask mandates. Gyms, bowling alleys, and movie theaters were opening. Yeah! We were tired of all this just as the weather turned cold here.

So, six weeks later the cases have spiked, middle/high schools have closed. Movie theaters have closed, again. Bowling alleys are closed. Restaurants are take out only no dining in at this time. You can have outdoor dining but in Michigan? It snowed a few days ago and we are expecting a lake effect snow storm next week. So we are closing down again with cold weather. Sigh.

I don’t have any answers. I wish we could get this all to just go away. But, it will not right now. I worry about the months to come. As it stands right now if we don’t change anything they predict 3,000 deaths a day in the US and 250,000 cases a day in mid-December to mid-January. I think if it was plane crashes, tainted foods, or cars that were killing 3,000 people a day we would stop the world to fix it. My weariness with all this is starting to show.

  1. I am so sorry to read this, Marci. We had our lock down during winter and it isn’t a picnic to be shut up at home during cold weather, day after day. You will get through it and come out on the other side. Everything ends, and we all knew in our hearts that Covid wasn’t done yet. Maybe you could write a cookery book?

Thank you! I think I do need to find a good project. I knew it wasn’t over but I think the going back into everyone inside again is tougher the second time around for sure.

  2. I feel it too, it is getting to be too much for sure. I think moms and dads worry even more. We all know why, our children. What a world to know our children are in it now. So I worry for them all the time. Here in Arizona it isn’t that strict either, for now that is. Everything is still pretty much opened, except theaters I think. I don’t believe they ever opened, unless they are out door drive in theaters. At all stores here, there are signs that say you must wear a mask and most stores have cleaning stations right at the entrance where people can gel up, wipe down baskets and grab a mask if they don’t have one. They also have employees who spray down baskets and clean baskets over and over. Each person that comes to a counter has a freshly wiped down counter between each customer, most stores do this. You have to wait a little longer but the stores make sure to wipe down over and over it seems. They also changed the layout of a lot of stores during our 2 month hard lock down when the virus first started. Now walking into stores it is more open and lots of space, only so many people are allowed in to allow enough space between everyone and there are large floor stickers throughout the store to remind everyone to stay away from others. If that wasn’t enough then they announce over the intercom to stay a safe distance away from others while shopping. It is surreal at times. They even have intercoms out in the parking lot reminding everyone to do this. I feel like I am in an episode of Black mirror. Driving home on the freeways the electronic overhead signs remind everyone to keep Arizona safe and wear a mask. Yeah…I am in a black mirror episode and hopefully will wake up soon. This of course makes my family laugh but I too am getting tired of it all. At least Christmas is coming and we all love that.

Thankful for Christmas coming and other little joys we find. We did the hard lock down March to June and to go back is tougher than the first time. I know it is all mental but my thoughts are darker and so are the rest of the family. Lots of baking and other projects to keep us busy will need to happen!

It is really hard now that we are heading into the winter months. The second wave was expected since people acted as COVID 19 had never existed. Now we have the results of that behavior all over the world. We need to learn to be more disciplined and patient AND that we all need to pull on that same string or it won’t work! Sending you big and sunny hugs, Marci. It will all be well again, we only need to hang in and we all will arrive at the end of the tunnel together! Much love to you and your family!

Our style of life has changed dramatically this year. We have been working from home, talking to friends and family on zoom and taking online bhangra lessons.

But we make time for our daily jaunts in the local woods where we cross paths with lots of locals and have a chat from a distance, sometimes we carry on our walk and grab a takeaway coffee to sip on the way back. It’s definitely allowed me more time to be more creative. I have also found a great deal of joy from writing letters and making small gifts for people I know are feeling a little low. I have been very touched at the calls I have had afterwards to say what a lovely surprise it was for them.

I just find that keeping myself busy and finding ways to show I am thinking of others has kept me feeling purposeful and motivated.

How wonderful that you have found ways to boost your spirits! I need to find what brings me joy again. I know that is part of what is dragging me down. Thanks!

wow! the USA is really bad off! Here in Ireland we aren’t too bad off. We are only getting about 200 to 300 cases perday, we are the lowest eurpeant country with the lowest rate of covid, I hope we can stay like this until the vaccine comes through in January.

I wish our cases and deaths were lower but people don’t believe in Covid or wearing masks. It is so sad that 3,000+ people died yesterday and not a peep about it. They still haven’t approved the vaccine here but hopefully in a few weeks it will start.
