Checking In: Day 365

Week 52: Schools are closing. Toilet paper, rice, canned meats, and frozen foods are in short supply in most grocery stores. It is a pandemic. We will be closed for 2-4 weeks. Stay safe. Stay in place. That’s how it began one year ago.

I have been crying a lot this week. All my emotions are very much on the surface. I got my first Covid shot on Monday. I am grateful that I was able to get one. I am scared that it may not work or it may work too much. My arm was sore on Tuesday and I was really tired. I also have Fibromialgia and gout and both decided to kick in this week too. Add it all together and I was a mess for a couple days.

But, I am better now. I am watching the numbers of cases in our state increase. I see the people not wearing masks or gathering in large groups and I get it. I am tired of this. I want to gather with my friends. I want to not have to remember to put on a mask every time I talk to someone or leave the house. But, we also had a bit of a scare with my wife this week that set us back again. We went to a socially distanced Irish Festival this weekend. There were bands and Irish dancers. It was outside on a bright sunny and windy day. As many began to imbibe though the masks came off and the others that didn’t feel like wearing masks began to take them off too. On Monday she began to feel sick. Sore throat, super tired, and stuffy. She slept for almost 8 hours during the day on Monday so we moved her to the basement to keep her quarantined until we knew for sure what was wrong with her. She is better now but it was a couple of days of “What did we do?” It was a good reminder to stay vigilant even when we are having fun. Lots of hand washing, hand sanitizer, and no going into the crowded bars to pick up drinks.

My schedule is jam packed for the next two weeks so I am hoping this beautiful daylight savings time will help. I can already feel the mood boost from the sun. Oh, don’t get me wrong I know I live in Michigan and there is at least one more good snowstorm coming yet. Probably around the beginning of April. Fingers crossed it bypasses us this year!

Good health to you and yours during this time!

  1. I figured that it would happen (a resurgence) because the majority of us still haven’t been vaccinated. This pandemic is not going to subside until we have. I’m still in solitary confinement. We have to be patient until the majority of us have and the United States has reached herd immunity. When you think about it, the vaccinations haven’t been administered that long.

I’m glad that your wife is feeling better.

Thank you! I know it is still going to take time to get there. Waiting always is the hardest part of anything.

Wow! We open to all 16 and over after April 4th. Sadly, I think that means many hear are not taking the shots so we have extra doses to use on those younger and younger. Both good and bad in that.

          1. I think it will be open to everyone at the end of April. Or is it May? I forgot but I signed up a month or so ago (twice) so it all depends on how much vaccine is available at that time.

  2. We are going into our third wave here, Marci, because people have now decided that this pandemic has run its course and is over. We don’t have vaccines here yet so it is really rather foolish, but there you go. I’m glad your wife is okay and you’ve had your vaccine.

Thank you! One more shot and two weeks later I will at least be on my way. Sadly the newest variants are the worry here and the shots don’t completely cover those although they think they have some protection. Fingers crossed. Hope you are able to stay healthy!

As I started to read your blog this morning I figured you were recapping LAST YEAR. How sad to hear about the relapse, but weren’t we warned as a country? People have eyes that do not see and ears that do not hear. Michigan was put on RI’s do not travel list this week. Now I know why Ann was not on the family zoom call on Tuesday morning. So glad she recovered quickly, and that’s the problem. ..every normal bout of something makes us anxious if it is the virus and spirals us into more anxiety and depression. I had my second dose of Moderna on St. Patrick’s day so I planned to stay low, even though all events are still cancelled here in New England and bars were still restricted in capacity. My only reaction was a sleepiness in the afternoon, so I gave into it and took a long nap, and then at dinner time I feel asleep at the table with a plate of half full food. Now that is unusual for me! I went to bed early and slept late and that was the extent of it. You are fortunate that they are down to your age group. Here it is still over 65, unless you “know somebody” and apparently a lot of people do, and multiple special interest groups. When they opened it up to all teachers this week there was a shortage for people with scheduled appointments and hell to pay as they had to hold back supplies for us second dosers to be on time. Just grateful we are all STILL HERE to complain. I am going to get some sunshine this week even if I have to sit bundled in a blanket on the porch. And don’t get me started on the weather. Thursday 3/11 70 degrees; Monday 3/15, 11 degrees. And yes, there will still be snow amid the crocuses. Virtual hugs to the fam.

Thank you, Pat! We are very lucky that they are opening the shot after April 4th to all who want it 16 and over. Sadly, I think this means that many are not taking the shot so they have extra. Our governor has become a lightening rod for all things Covid-19 related so there are lots of rebellion around it. They arrested a restaurant owner near us the other day and it made the national news. I feel awful for both sides as there is no great way to solve this mess. Open up freely and more get sick and die or shut down and limit people in spaces and people lose their businesses that they have worked so hard to save. No good answers. Hugs to you and family!
