My daughter and I are spending the weekend in Wisconsin so she can Feis today and tomorrow. It’s been fun so far. She got a new wig and a new crown. That is a big deal for her. She has always worn the headpiece that came with her dress but yesterday they had her try on a crown with the wig she was trying on. One look at her and I was hooked. She was so happy. When she said, “I look like a princess,” out came the wallet.
If you have ever wondered what a Feis is like it is a dance competition where boys and girls, (well mostly girls) wear curly Shirley Temple wigs and pretty dresses or vests. They say there is no crying in baseball? Well there is quite a bit of crying in Irish dance! Every Feis. Sigh. These kids put themselves out there time after time and it can be heartbreaking when what they thought of their performance doesn’t match the judges. But, they pick themselves up and do it all over again the next day or the next week.
They will dance in their soft shoes, ghillies, (think ballet slippers) and then their hard shoes. They are like tap shoes with large fiberglass toes. On the wooden floors they make a loud bang. So 700 – 1,000 dancers on 8 stages all dancing at once is overwhelming if you have never experienced it. All the stages are in a large ball room or conference center. They all run at the same time and can be running different dances on each stage. If there is ever one near you it is something to see.

I love Irish dancing and have been to a feis… what a scene and you described it perfectly. Your daughter looks beautiful; she is absolutely beaming! Good luck to her and her school. Happy Mother’s Day!
