I don’t often talk about my parents but with today being Father’s Day I had a memory lately that made me smile and think about how in some ways I really am my father’s daughter.
I remember my dad and I being in the garage of our house when I was about 7 or 8 years old. My dad was part of a local motorcycle group that was working to keep mandatory helmet laws from getting passed in New York State in the 1970s. He would take us for rides on his motorcycle and we ALWAYS wore a helmet, jacket, jeans and sneakers. These were his rules because he was endlessly preaching safety to us when we were near the motorcycles.
When I found out about what his group was holding rides without helmets to protest the possible passage of the helmet laws I asked him, why are you against helmets because they are to keep us safe if something happens?
He told me that he thought these laws were a slippery slope. First they will legislate having to wear a helmet when on a motorcycle because it is in your best interest. Then they will move on to other things. Seat belts use in cars will be next and who knows where it will end. One day the government will probably be telling us what to eat and drink. He told me you have to say no sometimes that you don’t agree with what the government is doing and protesting peacefully, like the motorcycle riders were doing, was one way to do this.
I never forgot that. He probably doesn’t even know I remember it. I know the phrase “Where will it end?” has been on my mind quite a bit lately as I look at all the laws and legislation being passed not only in our states and towns but by our Federal government too. Some I agree with, many I don’t. Where is the line and will I take a stand….
So, Happy Father’s Day to all. May you be making an impression on your children as my father made on me.

What a great story! I agree with your father. People need to step up when the government goes too far! Look what happened with forcing Americans to buy health insurance and the way doctors quit, the cost of care skyrocketed, and insurance rates went up.
