Do You Have a Leftover Meal?

Lately I have been going back and watching televisions shows from many years ago that I did not get to watch the first time they were on television. So, I have watched West Wing, How I Met Your Mother, and now Malcolm in the Middle.

One of the best moments so far for me is this exchange between Malcolm and his mom:

Malcolm: Mmm, I’m starving. What’s for dinner?

Lois: Leftover parfait.

Malcolm (to the camera): It’s even worse than it sounds! Once a week Mom cleans out the fridge. Anything that doesn’t have something growing on it gets served for dinner parfait. Did we have spaghetti or Chinese food on Thursday? Neither.

Ah! No! (digging through the layers of parfait) Sunday, Saturday, Friday. It finally happened! The fifth level of this week’s leftover parfait is last week’s leftover parfait.

I never really thought of this before but do you have a dish or two that you make to use up all your leftovers before they need to be thrown away? As I was making pasta salad last night and going through all the shelves and drawers to find any last pieces of leftover meat, cheese, or vegetables to use in the salad I realize this is just one of my “Leftover” Dishes. I hate throwing food away and I realized then that about once a week or so I make a dish to use up all the little pieces of stuff.

What is the soup, casserole or “parfait” you make most often to use up all the leftover pieces of meals. We also occasionally do buffet night where I pull anything I can out of the fridge to use up any last bits. There are usually very few leftovers for those nights.

  1. Never!!

Doesn’t sound very appetizing, the way it’s described.

Lol. It’s a joke from a television show. I do use leftovers in pasta salad (especially vegetables and meats), soup (veggie soup is a favorite) or casserole. đŸ™‚

  2. I do use my leftover meatloaf in spaghetti sauce, and Turkey after Thanksgiving in soup, and sandwiches, but that’s about it.

  3. Charley and I LOVE leftovers. We always make too much food,so we can cook it again. His sister is appaled and throws away every bit of food on the table after a meal. Every time her birthday comes around, he suggests we take her to a buffet. Her ultimate nightmare! I loved Malcolm in the Middle and the asides were always the best part.

  4. I often make extra portions of freezable stuff like pizza dough and stew ( https://apeaceoflife.blog/2017/03/10/root-veg-stew/ ) but we don’t have much in the way of leftovers since we got a German Shepherd!

  5. We actually have a “leftover night” almost every week. Our food budget doesn’t allow for much to be thrown away, so we all just grab our fav from the remains for our dinner. It has become one of our family traditions and a great way to teach my kids to be frugal and less wasteful. đŸ™‚

When the boys were young we had leftover night once a week. They loved it. They could pick and choose from their favorites from the week. My youngest son, who now lives only 4 miles away will ask if I’m having a leftover night so he can show up for dinner!

  7. Hello, I usually make something that can be turned into another meal another night. But it will be another dish dish so that it is different. Leftovers otherwise I turn into salads and add into them for work or school lunch. Ie extra chicken becomes chicken salad. Extra veggies leftover, add lettuce and tomato it’s a salad…
