Ready for Thanksgiving?

Many of you may know we don’t have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving. We do appetizers, dips, watch parades, and football. Because of our schedule I gave up doing the big meal several years ago on Thanksgiving day. Trying to get the meal ready on a Thursday was too much for us. Everyone ended up upset and crying or being angry.

We love our appetizer day and we have the turkey and trimmings another day that works for us.

If you are still looking for some ideas here is what we normally serve on our turkey day! Enjoy your day and make it your own! (Click for link to blog post.)

  1. I love the appetizers-only idea – appetizers are more fun anyway!

Thank you! So much easier too during such a busy time. We are no less thankful for what we have and I think we enjoy it a bit more on that day. 🙂

  2. Thanks for sharing ideas! I think traditional food for my family: oven-roasted turkey, cranberries, green bean casserole, turnips, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, mashed potatoes, biscuits, two kinds of stuffing, pecan pie and apple pie.

We’re just buying the specialties of our favorite restaurant, I’m cooking our favorite noodles, buy the cakes, cook some easy to cook sweets ( I can cook them days before. No hassle this year.

That’s a nice solution. Love it!
This year, I will cook the turkey breast, cranberry sauce (will buy), mashed potatoes, gravy, Brussels sprouts, and apple pie. Not that much because we don’t have a big family.

Thanks you. Sounds like a perfect menu. With just the four if us I try not to over cook to compensate.

  6. We don’t have a big family, either, especially this year so we’re going to a restaurant for Thanksgiving. I might try to make a turkey roulade that I saw on Valerie Bertinelli’s show on The Food Network to try next time.

Restaurants are very popular here on Thanksgiving. I want to stay in jammies all day and haven’t found a restaurant that will take me. 😉 That roulade sounds interesting!

      1. I know, I thought so, too. I saw it last week on Valerie Bertinelli’s show. It’s actually coming back on today at 12:30 Eastern Standard Time, if you have access to The Food Network.

And I’m horrible at making gravy, lol.

Gravy, I can do. It is the other stuff.

Turkey gravy in and of itself doesn’t have a lot of flavor. What you stuff it with and put over it is usually the flavors it picks up.

We also do a lot of snacks. I love putting out chips and dips, veggies and cheeses. This is one of our favorite things to do on Thanksgiving, just having a table full of deviled eggs and tiny foods, then we usually watch the Godfather series.

    1. My sister-in-law’s family watches The Godfather series on Thanksgiving – you’re only the second family I’ve ever heard about doing that. I have given her a hard time for 25 years…now I realize that maybe it’s a THING! What is the connection to turkey day?

Appetizers are just awesome and are little meals. It is a great ideal!
