Popcorn Mix Ins: One of Those Days

We have been so busy lately that it feels like I have not been able to connect as much as I want to with my children. Last night after a meeting that ended about 7 pm I decided to see if my son was free to do something fun (and for me unusual). I called him to be ready when I got home because we needed to go to the store.

I surprised him with a treat night. We had leftover Mediterranean food for dinner so I wanted to do something fun and unexpected with him. Our local grocery store does sales on movie theater sized candy every six weeks or so. They are 11/$10. I had him pick out 11 different kinds of candy and then we bought a box of microwave popcorn. Now I know I could make much better popcorn with olive oil and popcorn on the stove top but I was going for ease with this.

Verdict:

Everyone thought this was fun! Everyone could mix in just what they wanted and the warm popcorn softened everything just a little bit. It was great fun. We had chocolate candy, fruit candy, and add a bit of salt with peanuts or pretzels. This would be great for a movie night, a sleep over, or a group of friends who want a simple snack that they all can customize.

Some ideas for mix-ins:

  • Hot Tamales
  • Snow Caps
  • M&Ms
  • Nerds
  • Mini Charleston Chews
  • Butterfinger Bites
  • Little Pretzels
  • Nuts (peanuts, almonds, pistachios)
  • Swedish Fish
  • Whatever candy or nuts you love!

  1. I used to add peanut M&M’s to the popcorn bowl when my kids were little. The first time I did that they weren’t expecting candy at the bottom of the bowl and when they found a handful it was a happy surprise. I bet you guys had a fun movie night with all these treats.

Thank you! It was fun. When they were little we made what we called “Candy Salad” which had no candy in it but Chex cereal, yogurt covered raisins, pretzels, and peanuts. The kids used to love it.
