Tonga Toast

Tonga Toast

As many of you know my family loves Walt Disney World and well, anything Disney. We make annual trips to Disney and I loved it so much I finally became a travel agent specializing in Disney and Universal Studios. I love planning trips.

We are foodies and the highlight for our family isn’t just the rides it is also the food at Walt Disney World. You can find blogs about the churros, Dole Whips, and School Bread. One of the more hidden loves of many is the Tonga Toast from the Polynesian Resort. What is Tonga Toast? A thick slice of sourdough bread stuffed with banana and fried until it is golden and crispy then rolled in cinnamon sugar. Top it with some whipped butter and syrup? A little slice of heaven!

Verdict: This was delicious! It is the closest that I have had to Tonga Toast outside of Walt Disney World. We have decided as a family we need to make this for brunch. For dinner it was amazing and add a side of tropical fruit salad and you can almost pretend you are on a tropical island.

Tonga Toast

Ingredients:

  • 6 slices sourdough bread, cut 1 to 1 1/2 inches thick
  • 2 bananas
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 3 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • oil for frying
  • whipped butter and/or syrup

Directions:

  1. Cut a 1-inch horizontal pocket on one side of each bread slice.
  2. Peel bananas and cut banana in half horizontally, then split each piece lengthwise to make 4 slices. Stuff a slice or slice and a half in each pocket of the bread.
  3. Mix sugar and cinnamon; set aside.
  4. Beat the egg, milk, and vanilla until frothy.
  5. Heat about 4 inches of oil in a pan to 350 degrees.
  6. Dip stuffed bread into egg/milk mixture and let it soak a bit to let the egg mix penetrate bread.
  7. Fry the bread on both sides in hot oil until lightly browned, about 3 minutes.
  8. Drain on paper towels or wire rack.
  9. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and serve hot topped with whipped butter and syrup as desired.
