Courtney Thorn Smith’s Spicy Ground Beef – Revisisted

I was looking around for something to make with ground beef when I remembered this recipe – Courtney Thorn-Smith’s Spicy Ground Beef (click for link to original recipe), from several years ago. Courtney Thorne-Smith was an American actress best known for “Melrose Place” back in the 90s. It was a super simple recipe and I remembered how much my family really liked it. I went back to see how we would update it for our tastes now and it is fairly similar with just a few changes.

Verdict: My family’s tastes have become a bit more savory over the years. This dish is delicious with some Naan and tzatziki. Taste and adjust the spicy (red pepper), spices, and vinegar to your liking. Remember you are not making this for my family but yours. These are guidelines.

I served this with green beans and a green side salad to complete the meal.

  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1 1/4 tablespoon ground coriander
  • 2 teaspoons ground smokey cumin

  1. Place onions and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.  Saute onions until they begin to turn translucent.
  2. Add garlic, ginger, coriander, cumin and tumeric to the pan.  Stir well and saute for about a minute until they become very fragrant.
  3. Add ground beef, salt and pepper to the pan. Break the ground beef into small bits with the back of a spoon as it is cooking.
  4. Once ground beef is cooked through drain off fat and return pan to heat.
  5. Add red pepper flakes and vinegar to pan.  Taste and adjust spices to your liking. Stir for 1 minute before serving.
