This was an unusual meal. The meal preparation was going great up until we went to put the pizza into the oven. I have been reading all different suggestions for making better pizza. We make pizza at least once a week and I am always disappointed in the crust. So, what do I do? I research it.
I find a post recommending putting my pizza stone in the oven first at 450-500 degrees to heat and then sliding the pizza in on top of the stone to cook. Okay. Sounds about right. If you think about the pizza ovens at pizzerias they are hot and they slide the pizzas in and out on pizza peels. So, I decide to try this.
My pizzas looked great! I didn’t have a pizza peel so I used the back of a baking sheet. I used tons of pepperoni and bacon just like the kids like. We have a double oven stove. So I could cook 2 pizzas at once. We opened the oven door to put the first pizza in and it wouldn’t slide off the pan. Tried to move it with a spatula. No. Shoved it a bit harder. Right onto the racks of the oven. Cheese was running in the bottom of the oven and because it is a double oven right into the door of the oven below – at 500 degrees! Yes. It was a mess.
What am I going to do? You pick it up put it on a greased rimmed baking sheet and eat it. Yes, we salvaged what we could and baked it. My son actually liked it. I think it was because everything kind of mixed together with the crust – the sauce, cheese and meat. So no pizza stone pizza but we ate dinner.
I will be trying this again. Next time I will purchase a pizza peel first and not try to improvise. Though I really thought it was a great idea. So, no I do not have some magical kitchen where dinner just appears. I am a real mom and do things real moms do like pick the pizza up out of the oven and wave away the smoke as it bakes. How do you know dinner is ready? The smoke alarm is going off! Yup, this is our house.
Verdict:
My families favorite pizza is Pepperoni and Bacon. We served this a few weeks ago at a party and so many people had never tried it before! Bacon makes everything better!
Pepperoni and Bacon Pizza
Ingredients:
- 1 lb. premade dough or 1 large premade pizza crust
- 1 1/2 cups pizza sauce (I doctor spaghetti sauce with basil, garlic, onion, and dried oregano to taste)
- 2 cups mozzarella shredded
- 5 oz. pepperoni, thinly sliced
- 8 oz. bacon, cooked to crispy and crumbled
Directions:
- Place crust in a rimmed, greased baking sheet (unless you really want to try the “pizzeria method”). Spread to edges.
- Add sauce on pizza. Then add pepperoni to completely cover the pizza. Sprinkle with bacon and then cheese.
- Bake for 10-15 minutes until bottom of crust is golden brown and cheese on top is starting to brown.
- Remove from oven and allow to sit for 5 minutes before serving.

One of my favorite pizza toppings-YUM!!!

True. I am very honest. None of us are perfect and sometimes in reading food blogs we forget that.

So true. If we want to inspire one another and learn from one another then highlighting when things have gone wrong or problems we incur will help us all in the longer term.

What fun! I hope you and your son were enjoying the moment! Bacon and pepperoni sounds like an interesting combination. When i slide bread onto the baking stone I have sprinkled the peel with cornmeal. I am not sure if that would work with pizza dough. Anyway, bacon makes everything better!

This made me laugh! Last night I made flank steak and the smoke alarm kept going off. I just kept fanning it with a pot holder til it stopped then yelled, “dinner’s ready!!”

Lovely story 🙂 Things can’t always run smoothly, but I had to chuckle as I could easily see that happening with me, in my kitchen. And, you are right..Bacon makes everything better 🙂
