Just a Taste of Europe

In Frankfurt

My daughter has just ended her first week in Europe. If her pictures, texts and a phone calls are any indication she will be heading back at her next opportunity. We are encouraging her to try to take advantage of all that she can while she is there from sights to food. Here are a few pictures of her travels so far.

The picture* above is her first night in Rothenburg, Germany. While there she tried a cinnamon and sugar Schneeball. In her words, “It was so good!” I am already looking up how to make them and considering adding them to our German Christmas traditions.

*All pictures were taken by my wonderful friend who is guiding this tour, Jennifer Field.

Neuschwanstein Castle

It’s easy to tell why she loved this castle. The Neuschwanstein Castle is reported to be the inspiration for Walt Disney in his creation of Cinderella’s Castle in Magic Kingdom.

Dachau Artwork

Dachau was the place she was most interested in visiting. She wants to understand something that there is no way to understand. To her that this could ever happen is unimaginable yet she sees what is happening in our world now and understands how easily we could slip into this. This is the artwork outside the concentration camp. She did not take any other pictures as she felt it was disrespectful.

Scenery near Innsbruck Austria

This was near Innsbruck, Austria. She thought the Alps were beautiful but thought one day there was not enough. The bus trips have been far too long in her mind and she was wishing they had taken a train or something that didn’t have to contend with traffic.

Italy - Gondola Ride

On a gondola in Venice, Italy. That is where she is now. She has had pasta, pizza and gelato the last two days and I think my cooking will pale in comparison now. She said she basically licked the plate clean each night.

I am so glad that we have the opportunity to give her this chance to travel and see what life is like outside the United States. It will be interesting to see what she thinks of everything when she gets back.

  1. I agree Marci having our children visit new countries is a wonderful opportunity. My five are still talking about our 32 days In Italy, Greece and France. Me I would just as well sat at home in Florida staring at my Ocean-LOL. xx

What a great opportunity and one she seems to be enjoying to the full too, not only experiencing different cultures and foods but making sense of other countries history too. Great education but also for developing her confidence to do things without parents and experience independence. I hope the next time she visits Europe she is able to come to the UK and in particular Scotland. I would happily be a tour guide!

You should totally do it. Give yourself the chance. I hate flying but I’ve managed to go overseas and still have many places on my list including America. I’ve only been in the airport at Newark for a stopover on the way to and from Canada so next time I want to go and actually visit!

  6. I am so happy for you and your daughter! I’ve given mine the go ahead and do some traveling on her own next summer overseas, as she’ll be 18 then. Jitters, but I will let her!

Thankfully she is with a good friend of mine from college or I would be a wreck.

What’s awesome is that she’s sharing it all with you, too. I cannot wait to see through their eyes what my girls discover in this world. (My cafe slice of pizza on my desk now somehow seems insignificant.)

Gorgeous pictures!! My husband and I are visiting in the summer. Wondering what transportation you think is best while traveling the UK and the rest of Europe?

They did mostly buses and it was awful. The traffic while there was taking 2 to 3 times as long to get anywhere. In my opinion take trains if you can.
