The Right Teacher Can Make a Difference

hats-off-3

We spent part of our day at Michigan State University (MSU) yesterday. My son received an award for being in the top percentile of students in 6th, 7th or 8th grade in Michigan that took the SAT or ACT test last year. It was a wonderful ceremony. They really made the kids feel special.

One of the items that the students could do, if they wish, was nominate one of their teachers for recognition by writing an essay about them. My son chose to write about his 7th grade English teacher.

My son’s teacher was thrilled that he wrote an essay about her, she received a copy of his essay at the ceremony, and that he took the time to say how much he appreciated her. She helped him through a very tough time and was able to give him guidance and perspective when another teacher wasn’t working out well with him.  Though that teacher was good for other students she just did not connect with him and he with her. We were able to change the situation for them both and end the year with him in another classroom and a much calmer year-end.

Only 22 of the almost 300 students recognized chose to write about a teacher. I am VERY proud of our son and the time he took to write about his very special teacher.hats-off-2

That was important to us because we did not help him at all. He talked about her giving him a bedtime after he emailed her ay 1 am one night. He’s NOT a sleeper but it was my teacher said….

I love this! The school where I teach has a ceremony every year for 10 seniors receiving recognition for working through hardships while maintaining good grades. Each kid invites 3 teachers to be a guest at their table, and makes a speech about each one. Then they all eat dinner together. It’s easily one of the highlights of the year – it’s so wonderful to recognize a hardworking student, and its a great feeling to know you are appreciated. Congrats to your son!
