Dining Out: Shawarma King

About once a week my daughter and I either have a lunch or dinner out together. We try to find places that are not too expensive and are not always chain restaurants. Last night I asked her to choose the restaurant and to my surprise she chose Shawarma King. This little restaurant on Drake Road in Kalamazoo, Michigan is a college favorite and from the looks of the diners that were there last night the older couples too.

We weren’t sure what we wanted for dinner so we started with an appetizer portion of vegetarian grape leaves and water to drink for the two of us. When the plate arrived my daughter told me we should just have ordered two plates of the grape leaves for dinner because she loved them so much.

We finally settled on the Shawarma Delight to split for the two of us. It started out with either lentil soup for 2 or salad for 2. We chose the fattoush salad. It was HUGE! The bits of fried were light and delicious. I wish there had been a bit more vinegar, salt or something on the salad to give it more of a bite. It was good but just needed a touch of something.

The platter arrived and it was HUGE! Starting from the top and working around to the right. There were 4 meat grape leaves (we both liked the vegetarian ones much better), dill pickles, 2 fried kibbe, 4 falafel, beef shawarma, shish kafta (beef), a container of tahini, shish tawook (chicken skewer), chicken kafta, chicken shawarma, onions and hommous. This was all served with pita and a side of garlic sauce.

We ate well and still had enough food for a bite late last night and lunch today! For about $38.00 we felt we were well fed.

Our favorites were the kibbe, beef shawarma and the shish tawook. The chicken on the skewer was tender and juicy. With a little dab of garlic sauce it was heavenly! We plan on heading there again sometime soon for a platter or two of vegetarian grape leaves and maybe even some shawarma.

We fortunately have a Lebanese restaurant right in our tiny town. This is an hour away but I love it.

That is exciting! We are in Oakland county 🙂 – Gotta love MI with it’s diverse population and resilient people, funny to stumble on a Michigander in the vast web.
