Day 40 – We are learning quite a bit about what we need to keep stocked in our pantry. I always knew we were ready as we have a fairly well stocked pantry in case of a blizzard (yes, we have been through several), electrical outages, wind storms, etc… But, we have never been put our pantry to the test like this. We are learning about the things we need more of – chicken stock, canned or dried milk, yeast, seasonings (especially garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper), and candy. And the things we need less of? Beans, salad dressings, and canned soups are not going over well.
Part of the problem is lack of fresh vegetables and fruits so we are not making salads every night like normal. We are not having a giant bowl of fresh fruit on the table so the kids (and parents) are getting into more snack foods than ever during the day. Mindless eating sets in at times and we are trying to break that habit too.
We love cooking together but we still want to eat out once-in-a-while to support local businesses and well, because we just get lazy some days. The other night was one of the later nights. No one wanted to cook so we all looked at each other and said, “Pizza?” There are a few burger, pizza, and diners left open in our area but slowly everything is closing. Because we live in a small area there really wasn’t much to begin with anyway.
This pizza was one of the best I have eaten in awhile. The crust was light and fluffy and well done. It was crispy on the end crust and still fold-able in the cheesy end. I loved the big chunks of Italian sausage too. It was so delicious!
Are you ordering out? What are you eating? Is you pantry getting you through or do you need to stock up on some things too?
Thanks for this post and glad you sometimes order pizza, too. We are also struggling with making a single weekly shop do the week comfortably, especially with a family of 5.

Thanks. It is tough to plan ahead and if you have to shop week by week never quite knowing what the stores will have in stock. Wishing you all well!

I can relate. I have to remind my husband I don’t like it when he adds food to my plate. lol 😂

We’re totally locked in – my husband is one of the one and a quarter million medically vulnerable in the UK told by the NHS and the Prime Minister to stay at home for 12 weeks! I’m ‘shielding’ so don’t go near any shops. As he’s ill he has a small appetite. We used to take turns cooking and eat out; now I have to think EVERY day what to have for dinner that he will fancy! Mashed potato features a lot…

At times, we had ordered pizza, most of all because our son talked us into it. But since the restaurants have closed, we have not ordered anything, although the takeaway places are actually open. Also, we can still go grocery shopping which makes a big pantry not so necessary. But what I always have on a stock is rice and pasta, oil and vinegar, spices, and some frozen stuff like vegetables, fish, bread, cleaning agents… and toilet paper… lol. Believe it or not, but since I always buy when there is a special offer, I have not bought a single role even before Corona hit us.

Our grocery stores are limited in supplies right now. We tended to do one big shop once a month for standard items we use every day then we would shop once every week for fresh produce and sale items. Now that grocery stores are the breeding ground for social contact in our area it is tough to shop. They are recommending going as little as possible so we are trying. Though I did send my son out for produce tonight. I am tired of not having fresh items. Hope you all stay well!

I understand that completely that you keep those shopping times as limited as possible. And yes, the fresh food is the problem. The only thing that can help is frozen vegetables which still have the same amount of vitamins. But of course, it is not the same.
Yes, all is very well over here. Next week shops are opening again, also hair dressers, and other service provider. There are a lot of additional hygiene rules to follow. Regarding my therapy practice I have to follow those specific rules too. But slowly we are going back to a “new normality”. Stay healthy, Marci!

I’m missing fresh fruit and veggies, the stores never seem to have them!

Yes! We are grabbing anything we can when we get a chance and figuring out what to do with it later. We have had 2 packages of spinach and grapes in the last few days.

The pizza sounds fantastic! We initially were cooking a lot but we have been enjoy grabbing food occasionally to change it up.
